Profile: Dr Rob Smith was appointed to the staff of the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust in 2011. He trained at St Bartholomews Medical School, undertaking a postgraduate MD research Fellowship at Harefield Hospital.
Dr Smith manages all aspects of general cardiology including the investigation and management of chest pain, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, palpitations and dizzy spells. In addition he has expertise in a number of specialist clinical areas:
-Coronary stenting: He leads the audit for the large Primary Angioplasty program for heart attack patients at Harefield Hospital. He specialises in complex stent procedures and intracoronary imaging techniques. As well as the standard femoral artery route, he performs angioplasty procedures via the radial artery route which allows earlier mobilisation.
-Valvular heart disease: He has a specialist interest in the management of mitral valve disease and is a member of the mitral valve care group Harefield Hospital.
-Permanent pacemaker: He has a specialist interest in the management of bradycardia (slow heart beat) and pacemaker implantation.
Dr Smith sits on the North West Thames regional revascularisation group and is involved in planning networks of cardiac care at a regional level.
Dr Smiths research interests include myocardial ischaemic preconditioning and optimal strategies for the deployment of intracoronary stents using intracoronary optical coherence tomography.
